Jovan Murphy, 31, of Springfield, faces multiple felonies for the alleged attack, Springfield police said.
The victim told police she was walking along the 100 block of Union Street around 3:45 a.m. when an unknown man began to follow her. He grabbed her and held a box cutter to her throat, police said. She fought him off and escaped, but he slashed her throat during the fight.
The extent of the woman's injuries was not released.
Police got a photo of the attacker, tracked him down to Montpelier Street, and arrested him in the Oswego Street area, officials said. Police found a box cutter on him during the capture.
Springfield officers also linked Murphy to a sexual assault that happened on May 3.
Murphy is charged with:
- Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (two counts)
- Armed assault to murder (two counts)
- Mayhem
- Aggravated rape
- Strangulation or suffocation
- Armed kidnapping with sexual assault
- Threat to commit a crime
